Have you checked out St Andrew’s Primary Marayong’s basketball courts lately? They have been given a new lease on life with some ‘rad’ backboard designs!

At the end of last year, every student was invited to take part in a design competition. Students submitted some fantastic designs for the new basketball backboards and voted to choose winners. The winners then teamed up with some Year 5 students who became their graphic design artists. The designs were sent to a sign company to vinyl wrap the new basketball backboards.

Year 6 students Luke Smith and Alexandra Marasigan, who were part of the design team, said it was not easy. “We had to source free images to use and we found transparencies were the hardest to work with. I enjoyed learning about how to change colour images the most.”

Fellow Yr 6 students Steiffen Villedo and Jamie Callus said seeing their backboard designs installed makes them feel “very proud’’. “We could not wait to show our parents and tell them we all made them together,’’ they said.

St Andrew’s Technology Coordinator Matt Haynes said,“Now the backboards have been installed, you can see the students proudly showing them off to their parents and friends. It has created a sense of ownership amongst the students and renewed their interest in basketball again.’’
